Vegan Halloween: Candy, Treats and Party Food

A vegan Halloween is easier than most people expect — a surprising amount of classic US candy is already vegan, and the rest has good labelled-vegan alternatives. This short guide covers which candy is and isn’t vegan, what to hand out at the door, easy spooky treats to make, a small Halloween party menu and the gear for baking. Halloween 2026 is on a Saturday, so expect plenty of trick-or-treaters and parties.

Which Halloween candy is vegan?

Recipes vary by country and change over time, so always check the current label. Based on the US ingredient lists covered in our “Is it vegan?” pages:

Usually vegan (no gelatin, dairy or eggs)

Usually not vegan

  • US Starburst — contain gelatin. See are Starbursts vegan?
  • Most gummy bears and gummy worms — gelatin. See are gummy bears vegan? and is gelatin vegan?
  • Candy corn — most brands use gelatin and confectioner’s glaze.
  • Milk chocolate bars and peanut butter cups made with milk chocolate.
  • Marshmallows — gelatin, unless labelled vegan.

Some vegans also avoid candy made with cane sugar that may have been filtered with bone char; that is a personal choice and hard to verify from labels.

What to hand out to trick-or-treaters

The easiest approach is to buy candy that is labelled vegan, so you don’t have to check every ingredient. Organic fruit lollipops and vegan dark-chocolate peanut butter cups both come in individually wrapped Halloween packs. Mixing in non-food treats — stickers, glow sticks, pencils — also helps children with food allergies; the Teal Pumpkin Project from Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) encourages exactly this.

How much to buy: most houses give one or two pieces per child. A quiet street might see 20 to 50 trick-or-treaters; a busy neighbourhood can see 100 or more. On a Saturday Halloween, plan towards the high end.

Easy vegan Halloween treats

  • Pumpkin, bat and ghost cookies: any vegan sugar-cookie dough made with plant butter sticks, cut with Halloween cutters, decorated with vegan sprinkles. The dough keeps three days in the fridge.
  • Chocolate pumpkins: melt vegan dark chocolate, pour it into a pumpkin-shaped silicone mould, add a spoonful of peanut butter in the centre if you like, then top with more chocolate and chill.
  • Popcorn balls: our vegan popcorn bound with melted vegan marshmallows and a little plant butter.
  • “Monster” energy balls: our no-bake energy balls rolled in green matcha or orange-tinted coconut.
  • Apple “mouths”: apple slices with nut butter sandwiched with slivered almond “teeth”.

A small Halloween party menu

  • Main: a pot of three-bean chili with toppings in bowls — it’s warm, filling and easy to serve to a crowd.
  • Snacks: roasted pumpkin seeds from your jack-o’-lantern (rinse, dry, toss with oil and salt, roast at 325°F until golden), guacamole with blue corn chips, nachos.
  • Sweet: the cookies and chocolate pumpkins above.
  • Drink: spiced hot chocolate topped with vegan marshmallows.

Timeline

  • Two to three weeks before: buy candy — vegan Halloween packs sell out first.
  • Three days before: make cookie dough.
  • Two days before: make chili; bake and decorate cookies.
  • The day before: make chocolate pumpkins; carve the jack-o’-lantern and roast the seeds.
  • On the night: reheat chili, set out toppings and snacks, fill the candy bowl.

Feeding meat-eaters and vegetarians at the same table

At a Halloween party nobody is thinking about diets — they are thinking about costumes. Make the whole spread vegan, put the chili toppings in separate bowls so people build their own bowl, and label anything containing nuts or peanuts (common in vegan treats and important for kids with allergies).

Make it from your pantry

  • Flour, sugar, baking powder and vanilla (for cookies)
  • Plant butter sticks
  • Vegan dark chocolate or chocolate chips
  • Peanut butter
  • Popcorn kernels
  • Vegan marshmallows
  • Canned beans, tomatoes and chili spices
  • Oats, dates and cocoa (energy balls)
  • Vegan sprinkles
