Vegan Party Food: New Year’s Eve Appetizers, Finger Food and a Grazing Board

Vegan party food is the easiest kind of vegan cooking to get right, because most of the best finger food already is vegan — or is one swap away. This guide gives you a complete New Year’s Eve (or any holiday party) spread: a vegan charcuterie-style grazing board, hot bites, dips, sweet things and drinks, plus how much to make per guest and a timeline so you are not still frying at 11:55 pm.

The grazing board (a vegan charcuterie board)

“Vegan charcuterie board” gets thousands of searches a month for a reason: it is the centrepiece of a modern party table and it is mostly assembly.

  • Cheese: two or three vegan cheeses with different textures — a sliceable cheddar style, a soft spreadable one and a cashew cheese ball rolled in herbs or crushed pistachios. See our best vegan cheese and vegan cream cheese roundups, or the Violife cheddar slices review.
  • Salty: green and black olives, marinated artichokes, cornichons, smoked almonds, spiced roasted chickpeas.
  • “Charcuterie”: most people don’t miss it, but if you want something in that slot, use smoky marinated mushrooms or a store-bought vegan salami.
  • Carbs: crackers (check for butter or milk powder), sliced baguette, breadsticks.
  • Fresh: grapes, figs, apple and pear slices, cucumber, cherry tomatoes.
  • Sweet: stuffed dates, dark chocolate squares, dried apricots.

Pile items in clusters, put the dips in small bowls on the board, then fill gaps with grapes and herbs. One large board serves 10 to 12 people as part of a wider spread.

Hot finger food

  • Stuffed mushrooms: remove the stems, fill cremini caps with a mix of breadcrumbs, chopped stems, garlic, parsley, nutritional yeast and olive oil, and bake at 400°F for about 20 minutes.
  • Mini sliders: make our black bean burger mixture into small patties, bake or pan-fry, and serve in slider buns with pickles and a dab of sauce.
  • Spring rolls or samosas: many frozen vegetable spring rolls and samosas are vegan — check the label for egg in the wrapper.
  • Loaded nachos or potato skins: see our fully loaded vegan nachos for the cheese-sauce approach.
  • Mini muffin-tin bites: spinach and chickpea-flour “quiche” bites or mini cornbread muffins bake evenly in a mini muffin pan.

Dips

  • Guacamole — make it last, press plastic wrap onto the surface to stop browning.
  • Hummus and baba ganoush — both better made a day ahead.
  • Warm spinach-artichoke dip — blend soaked cashews with garlic, lemon and nutritional yeast, fold in chopped spinach and artichokes, and keep it warm in a small slow cooker.

Drinks

Not every sparkling wine is vegan — some are clarified with animal-derived fining agents that are not listed on the label. Choose bottles labelled vegan or check the producer on a database such as Barnivore. For a non-alcoholic option, a whiskey-sour-style mocktail (lemon, maple, ginger beer) gets its foamy top from aquafaba instead of egg white.

Timeline for New Year’s Eve

  • December 29: shop. Make the slider patties and freeze or refrigerate them. Make the hummus.
  • December 30: make sweet bites. Make the cashew dip base. Wash and cut sturdy vegetables. Prepare the mushroom filling.
  • December 31, afternoon: fill the mushrooms. Chill the drinks and glasses. Set out platters and labels.
  • Thirty minutes before guests: assemble the grazing board. Make the guacamole. Warm the dip.
  • During the party: bake hot bites in two waves — half when guests arrive, half around 10 pm — so there is always something warm.

Keep cold dips cold, keep hot dips hot, and don’t leave perishable food out for more than two hours (USDA guidance); swap out platters rather than topping them up.

How much to make

Party typeBites per guestFor 12 guestsFor 20 guests
Appetizers only (3–4 hours)10–12120–150 bites200–240 bites
Before a dinner4–650–70 bites80–120 bites
Late-night snacks after dinner3–436–50 bites60–80 bites

Have at least five or six different items. For 20 or more guests, double up on the cheapest, most filling things (dips, roasted chickpeas, bread) rather than making more kinds.

Feeding meat-eaters and vegetarians at the same table

  • Make the whole table vegan. Party food is where it is least noticed; nobody asks whether the guacamole is vegan.
  • If guests bring non-vegan dishes, give them their own platter and labels at one end of the table, with separate serving picks.
  • Use toothpicks and small tongs rather than shared hands-in bowls.
  • Label anything with nuts — cashew dips and cheeses are common in vegan party food.

Make it from your pantry

Party staples worth having in the cupboard:

  • Raw cashews (dips, cheese ball, cream sauces)
  • Canned chickpeas and black beans
  • Canned artichoke hearts
  • Olives and pickles
  • Tahini
  • Breadcrumbs or panko
  • Nutritional yeast
  • Smoked paprika, garlic powder and cumin
  • Crackers and breadsticks (check for butter and milk powder)
  • Medjool dates and nut butter
  • Dark chocolate without milk ingredients
  • Aquafaba powder or a can of chickpeas (for foamy drinks)
  • Maple syrup and lemon juice

Frequently asked questions

What are good vegan appetizers for a party?
Stuffed mushrooms, mini black bean sliders, vegetable spring rolls, bruschetta, guacamole and hummus with crudités, spiced roasted chickpeas and stuffed dates. Choose a mix of hot and cold bites that can be eaten in one or two mouthfuls without a fork.
How many appetizers do I need per person?
For an appetizer-only party of about three hours, plan 10 to 12 bites per person. If dinner follows, 4 to 6 bites per person is enough. Have at least five or six different items so the table looks full.
How do you make a vegan charcuterie board?
Combine two or three vegan cheeses (store-bought or cashew-based), something salty like olives, marinated artichokes or smoky roasted chickpeas, crackers and sliced baguette, fresh and dried fruit, nuts, a dip or two, and something sweet such as dark chocolate or stuffed dates. Group items in piles and fill the gaps with grapes and herbs.
Is champagne vegan?
Some is and some is not. Wine and sparkling wine can be clarified with animal-derived fining agents such as isinglass, gelatin, casein or egg white, which are not always listed on the label. Look for bottles labelled vegan or check the producer on a database such as Barnivore.
What can vegans eat at a party?
Anything made without meat, fish, dairy, eggs or honey: vegetable platters with hummus or guacamole, chips and salsa, bruschetta, olives, nuts, fruit, many breads and crackers, and dark chocolate without milk ingredients. As a host, labelling the vegan dishes makes it easy.
