Vegan Date Night Dinner: A Romantic Menu for Two

These vegan date night recipes are chosen for one reason: they feel like a restaurant meal, but you can cook them at home without spending the evening stressed at the stove. The menu works for an anniversary, a birthday dinner for two, Valentine’s Day (Sunday, February 14, 2027) or just a Friday night — and it works whether or not your date is vegan.

You get a full menu, two main-course options, a timeline that has dessert done before your date arrives, a pantry checklist, and the few pieces of kit that make the table feel special.

Starter: keep it simple

Bruschetta is the right starter for a date: it takes ten minutes, it is naturally vegan, and it leaves you room for the main. Toast slices of a good baguette brushed with olive oil, rub them with a cut garlic clove and top with diced tomato, basil, salt and a drizzle of balsamic. A salad of roasted beets, orange segments, toasted walnuts and arugula is a lighter alternative.

Main option A: wild mushroom risotto

Risotto is the classic romantic dinner because it is rich and comforting and it is cooked in one pan. Our vegan mushroom risotto gets its depth from porcini soaking liquid and its savoury finish from nutritional yeast instead of butter and parmesan. For a date-night version:

  • Use a mix of mushrooms — cremini plus a few shiitake or oyster mushrooms — and brown them hard in a hot skillet before they go in, so they taste roasted, not boiled.
  • Stir a pinch of saffron into the warm broth for colour and a subtle floral flavour.
  • Finish each plate with a few drops of truffle oil, flaky salt and chopped parsley.

Arborio rice needs about 18 to 22 minutes of stirring. Have everything chopped and the broth warm before your date arrives, then cook it together — risotto is a good dish to cook while talking.

Main option B: fresh pasta with sage and seared mushrooms

Fresh pasta does not need eggs. A dough of semolina flour and warm water (roughly 2 cups of semolina to ¾ cup of water) is how many Italian shapes are traditionally made. Knead, rest for 30 minutes, then roll and cut into fettuccine with a pasta machine, or shape by hand into orecchiette.

Toss the cooked pasta with plant butter melted until nutty with sage leaves, plus king oyster mushroom stems sliced into thick coins, scored and seared in a very hot cast-iron skillet until golden — they look and sear like scallops. Shortcut: a good dried pasta (check for egg) with our pesto pasta or aglio e olio is still a lovely dinner.

Dessert: done before they arrive

  • Dark chocolate mousse — four ingredients, made in the morning, set in ramekins in the fridge.
  • Chocolate fondue — melt dark chocolate with a little coconut milk in a fondue pot and dip strawberries, banana, pretzels and cubes of cake.
  • Lemon bars or mango sorbet — lighter options after a rich main.

Timeline for the evening

  • Morning: make the mousse (or cut the fondue fruit and cake in the afternoon). Make pasta dough if doing option B.
  • Mid-afternoon: chill the wine. Set the table: cloth napkins, candles, real glasses.
  • Two hours before: chop everything for the main. Make the bruschetta topping. Slice mushrooms.
  • One hour before: warm the broth (option A) or roll and cut the pasta (option B). Tidy the kitchen — date night is easier without a sink full of bowls.
  • When your date arrives: toast the bruschetta and serve it with drinks.
  • Twenty-five minutes later: cook the risotto or boil the pasta and sear the mushrooms.
  • After the main: dessert straight from the fridge, or switch on the fondue pot.

Scaling: two, or a double date

Everything here is written for two. For four people, double the risotto (a 12-inch skillet or wide pot holds four portions) or the pasta dough; the mousse recipe already makes several pots. Risotto above six portions gets hard to stir evenly — for bigger groups, see our vegan dinner party ideas.

Feeding meat-eaters and vegetarians at the same table

On date night that usually means one vegan and one person who isn’t. This menu was picked so nothing needs a substitute: risotto, fresh semolina pasta, bruschetta and chocolate mousse are dishes people already order in restaurants. If your partner really wants a non-vegan add-on — say, grated parmesan — put it in a small separate dish at the table so the main stays vegan.

Make it from your pantry

Frequently asked questions

What is a good romantic vegan dinner?
Something rich that feels like restaurant food but can be finished calmly at home: a creamy mushroom risotto or fresh pasta with sage and mushrooms, a simple starter like bruschetta, and a chocolate dessert made earlier in the day such as mousse or fondue with fruit.
What should I cook for a vegan date?
Choose dishes that are naturally vegan rather than imitations, so nothing feels like a compromise: mushroom risotto made with olive oil and vegetable broth, pasta aglio e olio, a Thai curry or pad thai, and dark chocolate mousse. Avoid anything that needs last-minute deep frying.
Is risotto vegan?
Traditional risotto is usually not, because it is finished with butter and parmesan and often made with chicken stock. Vegan risotto uses vegetable broth, olive oil or plant butter, and nutritional yeast or a vegan parmesan for the savoury finish.
Is fresh pasta vegan?
Egg pasta is not, but many Italian pasta shapes are traditionally made from just semolina and water, and most dried supermarket pasta contains no egg. Check the label for egg, or make your own with semolina flour and water.
What vegan dessert is best for Valentine's Day?
Chocolate mousse set in ramekins, chocolate fondue with strawberries and pieces of cake, or a small no-bake cheesecake. All of them can be made ahead, so dessert is ready when you are.
