Is a Bagel Vegan?

Yes — traditional plain bagels are vegan. A bagel’s classic formula is flour, water, yeast, salt, and malt (barley malt or malt syrup) — all plant-based. The distinctive texture comes from boiling the dough ring before baking, not from any animal ingredient. Egg bagels (a specific variety) are not vegan. Some bagels use an egg wash for sheen, which also makes them not vegan. Plain, sesame, everything, and poppy seed bagels are virtually always vegan.

Standard Bagel Ingredients (Vegan)

Traditional New York-style bagel:

  • High-gluten wheat flour — vegan
  • Water — vegan
  • Yeast — vegan (a fungus; see is bread vegan? for yeast discussion)
  • Salt — vegan
  • Malt syrup or barley malt flour — vegan (from malted barley)

The water-boiling step (briefly cooking the shaped bagel in water sometimes containing baking soda or honey) is responsible for the glossy, chewy exterior. Most commercial bagel production uses baking soda or malt in the boiling water; some traditional recipes use honey — if the boiling liquid contains honey, the bagel may not be fully vegan (though most vegans accept this as a very trace amount).

Non-Vegan Bagel Varieties

Egg bagels: A specific variety that adds eggs to the dough. Egg bagels are noticeably yellower and richer than standard bagels. They are labeled “egg bagel” and contain eggs — not vegan.

Bagels with egg wash: Some bakeries brush the top of bagels with an egg wash before baking to create shine. This makes those bagels not vegan. Ask at the bakery if you’re concerned.

Honey-flavored or honey-topped bagels: Some specialty bagels include honey in the dough or as a topping. Check the label.

Bagels with dairy-based toppings: Cheese bagels (jalapeño cheddar, asiago) contain dairy — not vegan.

Store-Bought Bagel Brands

Most store-bought bagels in the US (Thomas’, Dave’s Killer Bread, Pepperidge Farm, Sara Lee) produce plain and common-flavor bagels that are vegan. Check the ingredient list of specialty flavors — cheese varieties are clearly labeled.

Thomas’ Plain Bagels — Vegan. Ingredient list: enriched flour, water, malt barley flour, yeast, salt, vinegar. No eggs or dairy.

Dave’s Killer Bread Bagels — Check the specific flavor; most are vegan.

Lender’s Bagels — Most plain and common flavors are vegan; check specialty varieties.

What to Put on a Vegan Bagel

Traditional cream cheese is dairy-based and not vegan. Vegan alternatives:

  • Vegan cream cheese — Kite Hill, Violife, Miyoko’s, Forager Project — widely available
  • Hummus — a natural pairing; see is hummus vegan?
  • Avocado — smashed or sliced with salt, lemon, and red pepper flakes
  • Peanut butter — see is peanut butter vegan?
  • Vegan butter — with jam or jelly (see is jelly vegan?)
  • Lox alternative — some brands produce plant-based smoked salmon from carrots or tofu

FAQ

Is lox (smoked salmon) vegan? No. Lox is cured salmon — a fish. It is not vegan. Plant-based “lox” alternatives exist (made from carrots or tomatoes smoked with similar seasonings) and pair well with vegan cream cheese on bagels.

Are bagel chips vegan? Most plain bagel chips are vegan — they’re sliced, dried/baked bagels with oil and salt. Flavored varieties (cheese, ranch) may contain dairy. Check the label.

Is malt in bagels vegan? Yes. Barley malt (from malted barley) is plant-derived. It is used for flavor and to aid yeast activity. Malt is vegan.
