Vegan Trail Mix (4 Blend Ideas, 5 Minutes)

Trail mix requires no cooking, costs less than packaged versions, and lets you control exactly what goes in — which means no palmitic acid, no high-fructose corn syrup, and no mystery coatings on the dried fruit. Here are four blends that cover the main flavour directions: classic, tropical, chocolate-forward, and seed-based for nut-free needs.

Base Guidelines

Good trail mix has a ratio of roughly:

  • 50% nuts and seeds — the fat and protein base
  • 30% dried fruit — natural sweetness
  • 20% extras — chocolate chips, coconut, pretzels, or whatever adds texture

Blend 1 — Classic Mountain

  • ½ cup raw almonds
  • ½ cup cashews
  • ¼ cup walnuts
  • ¼ cup pumpkin seeds
  • ½ cup raisins or dried cranberries
  • ¼ cup vegan dark chocolate chips or chunks
  • ¼ cup unsweetened coconut flakes

Blend 2 — Tropical

  • ½ cup macadamia nuts
  • ½ cup cashews
  • ¼ cup dried mango chunks
  • ¼ cup dried pineapple
  • ¼ cup dried papaya
  • ¼ cup unsweetened coconut flakes
  • ¼ cup raw pepitas

Blend 3 — Dark Chocolate Crunch

  • ½ cup raw almonds
  • ½ cup pecans
  • ¼ cup vegan dark chocolate chips (check label — most 70%+ dark chocolate is vegan)
  • ¼ cup cacao nibs
  • ¼ cup dried cherries
  • ¼ cup sunflower seeds

Blend 4 — Nut-Free Seed Mix

  • ½ cup pumpkin seeds (pepitas)
  • ½ cup sunflower seeds
  • ¼ cup hemp seeds
  • ¼ cup sesame seeds, toasted
  • ½ cup dried cranberries or goji berries
  • ¼ cup dried apricot, chopped
  • ¼ cup vegan dark chocolate chips

Method

  1. Measure and combine. For each blend, simply measure all ingredients into a bowl and stir to combine.
  2. Toast (optional). For a more complex flavour, spread nuts and seeds on a dry baking sheet and toast at 325°F (165°C) for 8–10 minutes until fragrant. Cool completely before adding dried fruit and chocolate (chocolate melts if mixed while the nuts are warm).
  3. Store. Transfer to an airtight container or portion into individual zip-lock bags. Trail mix keeps at room temperature for 2–3 weeks, or refrigerated for up to 3 months.

Tips for Better Trail Mix

Check dark chocolate labels. Most 70%+ dark chocolate is vegan (cocoa butter is not dairy), but some brands use milk powder or milk fat. Check the allergen statement for “contains milk” rather than reading the full ingredient list — this is faster.

Portion for convenience. Portioning into ¼-cup servings in small bags before storing means grabbing a snack takes zero thought.

Toast the nuts. Even 10 minutes of gentle toasting transforms the flavour of raw nuts significantly — deeper, more complex. Worth the effort if making a larger batch.

Vary the texture. The best trail mixes have chew (dried fruit), crunch (toasted nuts), richness (dark chocolate), and light crispiness (coconut or seeds). All crunchy or all soft is less satisfying.

FAQ

Is trail mix a good vegan snack? Trail mix provides fat from nuts and seeds, natural sugars from dried fruit, and some plant protein. It’s calorie-dense relative to its volume, which makes it effective as a portable snack. Because of the fat content, it’s satiating.

What dried fruits are vegan? All plain dried fruits are vegan — raisins, cranberries, apricots, mango, figs, dates, goji berries. The caveat: some dried cranberries are coated with oil (usually sunflower oil, vegan) or contain added sugar. Some conventional gummy-type dried fruits may have gelatin coatings — check the label.

Can kids eat this trail mix? Yes, with some adjustments. Remove whole nuts for small children (choking hazard) and replace with smaller seeds or puffed rice. Reduce or remove the dark chocolate for very young children.
