Vegan Golden Milk (Turmeric Latte, 10 Minutes)

Golden milk — turmeric latte — is a warm, spiced plant milk drink with origins in Ayurvedic tradition. It’s warming and aromatic without caffeine, and the combination of spices (turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, black pepper) makes it genuinely interesting rather than just flavored milk. The black pepper is not optional: it contains piperine, which significantly increases the body’s absorption of curcumin from turmeric. Ten minutes, one pot.

Ingredients

  • 1½ cups (360 ml) plant-based milk (oat milk or full-fat coconut milk work best)
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger (or 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated)
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper (freshly ground — increases curcumin absorption)
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup or coconut sugar (adjust to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • Pinch of cardamom (optional)

Method

  1. Combine ingredients. Add plant milk, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, black pepper, and maple syrup to a small saucepan.
  2. Heat gently. Heat over medium-low heat, whisking frequently, until the milk is steaming and just below simmering — about 5–7 minutes. Don’t boil — boiling can make the milk separate and reduces some of the delicate flavor compounds.
  3. Froth (optional). Pour into a mug and froth with a milk frother for a more latte-like texture. Or pour directly.
  4. Taste and adjust. Add more maple syrup for sweetness, more ginger for warmth, or more cinnamon for spice.
  5. Serve. Pour into a mug. Dust with an extra pinch of cinnamon or turmeric on top.

Tips

Use full-fat coconut milk for the creamiest result. Full-fat coconut milk produces a very rich, indulgent golden milk. Oat milk produces a lighter, more everyday version.

Don’t skip the black pepper. Piperine in black pepper increases the bioavailability of curcumin from turmeric. A small pinch does the job.

Whisk constantly. Turmeric settles if you leave it — whisk while heating to keep it suspended in the milk.

Fresh ginger vs ground. Fresh grated ginger produces a more pungent, vibrant ginger flavor. Ground ginger is milder but easier. Both work — adjust quantity to taste.

Golden Milk Paste (Batch Prep)

Make a paste to keep on hand:

  • 3 tablespoons ground turmeric
  • 1 tablespoon ground ginger
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil (helps fat-soluble curcumin absorb better)
  • Water (add just enough to make a thick paste — about 2 tablespoons)

Stir together. Store in a small sealed jar in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Use 1 teaspoon of paste per cup of plant milk — whisk into warm milk.

Variations

Iced golden milk latte: Make the mixture, let cool, pour over ice. Add extra oat milk to dilute. Refreshing in summer.

Spiced golden milk: Add ¼ teaspoon of ground cloves and a small pinch of ground nutmeg.

Richer version: Use half plant milk and half full-fat coconut milk.

Coffee golden milk: Add ½ cup of strong brewed coffee or 1 shot of espresso.

FAQ

Does golden milk stain? Turmeric stains almost everything it contacts — ceramic, plastic, clothing, and wood surfaces. Use a metal whisk and saucepan. Wash immediately after use. Be careful pouring.

Is golden milk caffeeine-free? Yes — the base recipe contains no caffeine. It’s a suitable evening drink. The coffee variation adds caffeine.

What’s the difference between golden milk and turmeric tea? Golden milk uses plant milk as the base. Turmeric tea uses water. Golden milk is creamier and richer; turmeric tea is lighter and thinner.
